AEO/GEO for retail: connect discovery with the right store
Retail AI-search answers should help a shopper identify the right product, location and next step. A retailer can be named in an answer while the customer still receives the wrong opening hours, an irrelevant assortment or an unsupported pickup promise. Useful measurement therefore examines store facts alongside brand visibility.
AEO/GEO, or Answer Engine and Generative Engine Optimisation, helps teams investigate how answer engines represent their public information. HolistiCRM proposes a retail workflow that links observed answers to store and merchandising sources, then turns the evidence into owned content and operational tasks.

Map the journey from need to visit
The journey starts with a need: a suitable product, nearby shop or accessible service. It continues through product comparison, local availability, directions and pickup. After the visit, customers may need support, exchanges or contact information. A store's presence in discovery is only one part of that journey.
| Persona | Typical question | Evidence needed |
|---|---|---|
| Local shopper | Which nearby store is open this Sunday? | Correct location and date-specific opening information |
| Product-focused shopper | Does this branch carry the category I need? | Branch assortment, distinguished from chain-wide range |
| Pickup customer | Can I reserve and collect this item today? | Location, stock status, reservation and collection rules |
| Store/merchandising manager | Which information is stale or missing? | Source conflict, affected branch and accountable action |
| Marketing/procurement team | What changes can we prioritise and accept? | Journey coverage, briefs, owners and inspection records |
Test geography explicitly. A national brand question, a city question and a named-branch question should not be collapsed into one score. Record the test date for time-sensitive queries.
Create a store-and-assortment fact model
Use a stable location identifier joining the approved store page, directory/profile records and operational source. Store facts include address, coordinates, contact channel, regular hours, exceptional hours and available services. Each carries a source, owner, review date and applicable period.
Product facts have a different grain: product/category, branch, assortment status, stock timestamp and fulfilment channel. Carrying a category does not prove an individual item is available. Online availability does not prove branch availability. A reservation request does not establish a confirmed pickup slot.
Agree freshness limits with operations. When live stock cannot be substantiated, content should provide the official checking route. Store operations owns hours and collection rules; merchandising owns assortment; digital teams maintain the published pages and data connections.
Write briefs that resolve a shopper's task
Prioritise durable store information and clear checking routes before publishing large volumes of generic category copy. A useful store page joins directions, services, current hours and pickup guidance. A category guide explains selection criteria with evidence from approved product information.
DUMMY example – fictional store and finding
DUMMY — fictional illustration; no client result.
| Field | Illustrative task |
|---|---|
| Question | Can I collect an item at Store A today? |
| Hypothetical finding | An answer confuses chain-wide assortment with local availability |
| Content brief | Explain branch selection, stock checking, reservation confirmation and collection steps |
| Owners | Store operations approves process; digital commerce implements the page |
| Acceptance | The published route identifies the selected branch and separates stock checking from confirmation |
The example is a DUMMY workflow demonstration. It reports no observed retailer error, real stock position or achieved improvement. A brief records source passages, target URL, dependencies and the comparable follow-up test.
Inspect technical and local access
Can each location be reached from the store finder through a stable URL? Are important details visible as readable content? Do pages identify exceptional opening hours? Are closed or relocated branches clearly handled? Does the published assortment describe the correct branch and market?
Google documents LocalBusiness information for locations, hours and departments. Use the appropriate subtype and validate markup against the visible store facts; eligibility does not guarantee display. This supports Google-specific implementation, not a promise that every LLM will cite the store. Google LocalBusiness guidance
Check crawler access, canonical routes, language/location navigation and contradictory duplicate records. Obtain genuine review evidence through the retailer's approved process; fabricated reviews or availability cannot create a trustworthy source.
| KPI | Calculation basis | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Location accuracy | Correct locations / assessable location answers | Store operations |
| Hours accuracy | Correct date-specific hours / assessable hours claims | Store operations |
| Availability fidelity | Supported branch/item statements / reviewed availability claims | Merchandising |
| Pickup-process accuracy | Correct checking and confirmation steps / assessable pickup answers | Fulfilment owner |
| Local-source coverage | Eligible valid local answers displaying at least one relevant official-store source link / all eligible valid local answers | Search analyst |
Separate brand mentions, product recommendations and store-task accuracy. Record failed runs and unavailable evidence. Direction, call or reservation events can provide business context where approved analytics supports them; they do not automatically prove an AI answer caused a store visit.
Accept a focused pilot before scaling
Begin with selected locations, a category and agreed customer journeys. Deliver the question inventory, source register, evidence records, prioritised briefs and owner decisions. Recheck the same cells after approved changes and disclose any different stock or opening conditions.
Plan a retail discovery pilot. Review the measurement method and compare the ecommerce approach when online offers form part of your customer journey.
