AEO/GEO for ecommerce: connect product discovery with accurate offers

Ecommerce AI-search work should preserve the identity of the product, its variant and the merchant's current offer. A shopper can receive a useful recommendation and still arrive at the wrong size, outdated price or unsuitable shipping option. An effective audit follows that information chain through to the buying decision.

AEO/GEO, or Answer Engine and Generative Engine Optimisation, examines how generated answers represent your products and business. HolistiCRM proposes a workflow combining answer evidence, approved product facts and prioritised content briefs. Discovery, offer accuracy and customer outcomes receive distinct measures.

Follow the online buying journey

Customers move from a need to a shortlist, compare specifications, choose a variant and investigate the seller. Shipping, payment and returns then shape the purchase. After delivery, they may need instructions, support or the current return process.

Follow the online buying journey
PersonaTypical questionRequired evidence
Researching shopperWhich product fits these requirements?Approved specifications and comparison criteria
Variant buyerIs the selected size and colour available?Exact SKU/variant and timestamped offer
Delivery-sensitive shopperCan this seller deliver to my destination?Applicable shipping region and current conditions
Returns-focused shopperWhich return policy applies to this item?Relevant merchant policy and any supported exceptions
Commerce/procurement reviewerWhich errors and briefs should we act on?Traceable facts, accountable owners and acceptance checks

Include branded and category-level questions, relevant destinations and realistic product constraints. Separate recommendation prompts from requests to explain an already selected item. Keep identifiable customer/order information outside public testing.

Preserve product and offer identity

The source register joins parent product, variant identifier, SKU, valid GTIN where available, brand, specifications and target URL. Offer records add merchant identity, market, currency, observed price, availability, applicable period and collection timestamp. A stable product fact and a fast-changing commercial fact need different review schedules.

Maintain shipping and returns as owned policy records, with country, effective date, source and permitted exceptions. A seller's standard policy may differ from a specific offer. Marketplace sellers also need clear identities: do not silently assign the marketplace's terms to every merchant.

Agree how feed, page and checkout conflicts are resolved. Product-data owners approve specifications; trading/operations owns price and stock; fulfilment owns delivery information; customer service owns the published returns route. Missing facts remain visible for review.

Turn evidence into useful product content

A content brief connects the observed customer question to a target product/category/policy page, approved passages, proposed structure, implementation owner and review test. Priorities may include variant guidance, evidence-based comparison tables, compatibility explanations, delivery FAQs or links to applicable return conditions.

OwnersProduct-data owner and commerce operations

This DUMMY example is not a live finding, price, stock position or client result. It invents no customer reviews, shipping promise or return entitlement. The brief also records dependencies and comparable follow-up conditions.

Inspect product access and technical consistency

Can an engine discover product pages through meaningful category links? Do variant URLs resolve predictably? Is the visible price/stock consistent with permitted structured data and feeds? Are seller identity, contact, shipping and returns easy to inspect? Where relevant, verify merchant accounts and website ownership through the client's authorised access.

Google documents ProductGroup for variants and merchant listing information for offers. It also distinguishes organisation-level return policy from offer-specific exceptions. Apply these to supported, visible facts and test the implementation; markup does not guarantee search display or LLM recommendations. Google variants, merchant listings, return policies

Record source timestamps and unknown cases. An offer may change between collection and review; distinguish changed truth from a measurement error. Referral sessions and conversions can add context when analytics is available, but do not establish attribution by themselves.

Scope, approve and remeasure

Start with a category, selected variants, markets and journey questions. Accept the source register, raw evidence, reviewer decisions and executable briefs before scaling. Remeasure comparable cells after approved changes; disclose offer changes, engine differences and missing records.
